Concrete is a construction material composed of cement (commonly Portland cement) as well as other cementitious materials such as fly ash and slag cement, aggregate (generally a coarse aggregate such as gravel, limestone, or granite, plus a fine aggregate such as sand), water, and chemical admixtures. The word concrete comes from the Latin word "concretus" (meaning compact or condensed), the past participle of "concresco", from "com-" (together) and "cresco" (to grow).

Concrete solidifies and hardens after mixing with water and placement due to a chemical process known as hydration. The water reacts with the cement, which bonds the other components together, eventually creating a stone-like material. Concrete is used to make pavements, pipe, architectural structures, foundations, motorways/roads, bridges/overpasses, parking structures, brick/block walls and footings for gates, fences and poles.

Concrete is used more than any other man-made material in the world. As of 2006, about 7.5 cubic kilometres of concrete are made each year—more than one cubic metre for every person on Earth. Concrete powers a US $35-billion industry which employs more than two million workers in the United States alone. More than 55,000 miles (89,000 km) of highways in the United States are paved with this material. Reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete are the most widely used modern kinds of concrete functional extensions.

How do you preserve a concrete statue that is exposed outdoor?
Q. I have a 1-foot tall concrete chicken statue that I decorate my garden. Since it is exposed to weather, over time, the paint peel off and some of the concrete is chipped. How do I fix it so that it will last long?

A. I have several concrete statues and fountains in my yard which I have used several manufacturer's paints to spruce up over the years. I've found that the Patio Paints and sealer last about the longest even when exposed to water spraying from the fountains. You really have to wire brush off all of the peeling paint on the statue before starting and use the primer and the sealer after painting for the best adhesion. I have pieces that I painted 10 years ago out there that have weathered better than the ones on which I used concrete paint from the home improvement centers.

What should this cost to pump the concrete thru a hose into a basement room?
Q. I have a 8 ft x 9 ft room in my basement without any concrete it is just sandy/rocky soil. I assume I need about 3-1/2 slab to make it even with the other part of the basement. What should this cost to pump the concrete thru a hose into the room? There is only a small window adjacent to the room to get the concrete in; I do not think a trough will fit though that window.

A. Pump rental costs vary by area. Maybe you can get a weekender deal. Contact the local concrete distributor. They should be able to give you a good estimate.

Can a concrete slab/foundation with crack be repaired without repouring a complete new foundation?
Q. The concrete slab has a crack accross and I want to repair the crack area and lay a thin layer over whole to lev el and clean up complete floor. Is this possible ? any suggestions on how to do this ?
Asked by wonderer - Sat Apr 19 17:38:19 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If the crack is not active (getting larger) you can fill it with various materials, including masonry caulk. repair would be similar to this: As for laying a thin layer of material over the floor to level it, consider something like self-leveling underlayment. This is a cement or gypsum-based product that is mixed into a slurry and then poured over a floor and then spread with a squeegy. The material is liquid enough to level itself out and form a smooth surface, then dries very hard. Various companies make such products; one is noted below. Always check with the manufacturer to see what surface prep they recommend for filling cracks.
